Each of us is a completely unique individual with their one-of-a-kind personality, characteristics, skills and aspirations. But no matter how different we might be from each other, we all share this incredibly astonishing and often quite challenging experience of being human. Going through life is full of ups and downs for each and everyone of us, filled with everything from ecstatic moments of happiness to devastating moments of despair. We all know what it’s like to feel sad, hurt, alone or unloved - and it is in times like these when the power of a caring word or a loving smile really shines through in all of its glory.

When we are going through a challenging time, the world can seem like a harsh and an unkind place, making us act in a hurtful and cold-hearted way towards others. But remember, spreading hurt always just breeds even
more hurt. As the great Martin Luther King Jr. once said:
Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.
It is completely up to us whether we are going to let the tough times harden us or make us more compassionate. We can be a part of making the world become an even more unwelcoming place by spreading our pain forward onto others or we can decide to stop the vicious cycle of hurt and rather try to be the person we needed when we were going through a tough time.

When you see someone act in a bitter or snarky way, you can always choose not to respond in a hurtful way but rather act in a kind and a compassionate matter, realizing that we are all going through hardships and the best thing we can do is to be there for one another, to be kind, loving and gentle. You might be surprised how quickly people can drop their tough act and show their vulnerable side hiding underneath when greeted by kindness and compassion on the other side.
Kindness makes you happier
Have you ever given someone a compliment, smiled at a stranger or held the door for someone? How did you feel when you performed these random acts of kindness, pleasantly surprising another human being with a small, but thoughtful gesture?
The astounding fact is that we feel just as good or possibly even better when we do an act of kindness, then we do when someone does a kindness to us. Moreover, the studies have shown that performing just one act of kindness a day contributes to being calmer, healthier, happier and even living longer.
The reason for so many positive benefits hides in the fact that acts of kindness stimulate the release of oxytocin, the love hormone that makes us feel more trusting and friendlier, serotonin which helps regulate our mood and dopamine which attributes to a feeling of happiness and joy, causing what’s known as the “helper’s high”.
By spreading kindness and happiness to others around us, we also grow kindness and happiness for ourselves inside of us.

Kindness is one of the most beautiful and influential traits we can share with one another, positively affecting the person who experiences it as well as the person who expresses it.

Whether helping an older person carry their grocery bags, giving someone a compliment or passing along a great book to your friend, these small, but meaningful gestures are going to brighten someone’s day and at the same time influence them to act from their heart with others as well.
